We've got our annual June sale on in my store at the moment, and these babies came in for just NZ$4.99 (US$3.94) each - and then half price for the second book!
I can't believe I missed out on all of this while I was growing up, because I was too busy indulging in Sweet Valley Twins & Friends. However, I console myself with the fact that interspersed between those books featuring the bubblegum-sweet golden girls, I also read as much Goosebumps as I could, and Archie comics!
I also got these ones last week: The Giant O'Brien came free with Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel, which I absolutely loved (though not as much as it's precursor, Wolf Hall). Last Will by Liza Marklund, which has a film screening with the same title, at least at the moment here in New Zealand. If I'm not mistaken, it's by the same people who made the original Millennium trilogy movies, so should be good!
The Chaperone isn't something I'd normally go for, but I've never read anything based on the flapper-era/background, so I've decided to give it a shot. It's also highly recommended by the company's head book buyer.
Last but not least, At Home by Bill Bryson. It's a book I've had my eye on for a long time, and I just had to grab it when I saw it on special. Got to love those sales. Hopefully he doesn't lose me on this one. Much as I enjoyed Mother Tongue, I had to keep re-reading big chunks of it.

ReplyDeleteI haven't read much Dahl but I remember absolutely adoring James and the Giant Peach when I was a kid. Those books at that price are a great score!
I picked up The Chaperone at BEA...but now I am not too sure it is for me...I was thinking that I might do a giveaway for it...but maybe I'll wait to see what you think of it!
I've got the chaperone on the way in audio...I do love the flapper era stuff so I've got high hopes for it :)

I absolutely love Roald Dahl! In fact, I re-read a lot of these books with my daughter when she was in second grade.
